A dry riser is an empty pipe that runs up through a building. In a fire, the fire service pumps water into it at ground level so they can connect hoses on the upper floors. If the riser leaks, is blocked or has missing parts, firefighters lose water where they need it most.
Dry risers should have a visual inspection every six months and a full pressure test once a year, under BS 9990.
What we check
- Inlet and outlet valves, caps, chains and straps
- Inlet and landing valve boxes, doors, locks and signage
- Drain valves and air release valves
- Annual wet test: the riser is filled and pressure tested to find leaks
- Fire hydrants: access, marker posts, valves and flow
What you get
A test certificate for each visit, and a written report of any defects with a quote to fix them.
Who needs it
Owners and managers of taller buildings with dry risers, and sites with private fire hydrants, such as industrial estates, campuses and large commercial premises.
