How often should fire extinguishers be serviced?

BS 5306-3 recommends a monthly visual check by you, a basic service by a competent technician every year, an extended service every 5 years for water, foam, powder and wet chemical extinguishers, and an overhaul every 10 years for CO2.

Is fire extinguisher servicing a legal requirement?

The law requires fire safety equipment to be kept in efficient working order (Article 17 of the Fire Safety Order). BS 5306-3 sets out how often it should be serviced.

Which fire extinguishers does my business need?

It depends on the fire risks in your building, such as electrical equipment, flammable liquids or cooking oils. Your fire risk assessment should identify them, and we can advise on the right types and where to put them.
